I have been to the Flatz Restaurant at the Renaissance hotel quite a few times. I have had breakfast, lunch and dinner there with or without company. I can truthfully say that this place happens to be one of my favorites. Not only is it near to where I live, it also serves good food. I understand that the motto of the Flatz Restaurant happens to be ‘food first’ or ‘food forward. I hear that they source fresh produce and ingredients and create dishes which are seasonal in nature. I don’t care what other people think about it but I think that this restaurant has done a great job of creating foods which bring back memories and sensations of positive times. May be I am a nut, but the food and ambiance at the place makes me think of a bowl of hot chicken soup at my mother’s house! The ambiance is warm and inviting and the staff is friendly and attentive. The food, as I said, is quite amazing.
Last Sunday, I and my husband went for breakfast at the Flatz. We both run most mornings and we are usually hungry early in the day. So this day, we decided to have breakfast at the place. Their buffet is what we chose though they also have an extensive a-la-cart menu as well. The buffet has all the favorites one would expect: bacon, sausage, waffles, hash browns, potatoes, breakfast pastries, cold cereals, oatmeal, pancakes and fruits. What is really great is that you can order things which are not on the menu as well. I am sure we will be coming back for breakfast here very soon. I said before that this place uses fresh produce and ingredients, which is quite apparent from the quality of the dishes on offer. I have heard that the buffet menu is also changed frequently so it means you won’t have to eat the same set of things two days’ running. Also, the biscuits and gravy this place offers are amazing. If not for anything else, we are certainly going to go back for this alone!
The service is typical of a hotel restaurant. Though we last went there on Sunday morning when the traffic is not high, it is obvious that on busy weekends, the place is going to be stuffed. Because this happens to be a hotel restaurant, busy traffic at the hotel will obviously mean a lack in service. But overall, if you are not too picky, the service is good.
I have had lunch and dinner quite a few times at this place and the food options are good. The portions are large enough and I was not wanting for food. The Turkey and avocado club sandwich is something I love ordering whenever I am here. I also like the Fish and Chips here a lot. The ‘chips’ are excellent and exactly what they are supposed to be like! The desserts are also good. If you have kids with you, ask your server for the Kid’s Menu (they have an extensive one).
